Using Facebook To Promote Specials and Product Launches

Facebook is a great way to promote specials and promotions for small businesses on the web. Using the power of the friends that you have spent time collecting and nurturing, businesses can get a interactive kick from comments, testimonials and post sharing with the ease that Facebook provides. In conjunction with Twitter and Youtube, businesses can plan out a promotional strategy that could put their offerings in front of the eyes of thousands of people.

A couple of weeks before any type of special promotion, the business will want to create small video productions that can be uploaded and shared on social media sites. Videos that are no longer than 2 - 3 minutes in length showing customers giving testimonials, using the products, having fun at past events... anything that creates fun and excitement. No matter what kind of business you have, there are ways to create an informative or commercial aspect to the video production.

These videos can be uploaded to Youtube and Facebook on the day before the big promotion and shared with your friends on their home news feeds. Contact your friends and followers a couple of days beforehand to solicit their comments on your wall in exchange for a special coupon or giveaway just for them. Every video you upload to Facebook or Youtube notifies all of your friends and subscribers to invite them to watch. Each of your friends that makes a comment on your Facebook Wall stating how much they like your business creates a notification to all of their friends. You have now started a domino effect that could put the promo video before the eyes of hundreds of thousands of people.

Your account administrator can leave "thank you" comments in response that will create a sense of interactivity and a personal touch. This kind of buzz is a powerful branding tool that keeps your logos and products on the top of your friends minds and makes them feel as if you care and are taking the time to connect with them.

Facebook's "Events" tool gives you the ability to invite your friends to a special event that involves a specific date and time such as a store opening or a three day only sale. The RSVP feature in the Event tool lets staff keep track of how many people may show up or just to see how effective the promotion is going. And of course, the Facebook email system can notify all of your friends about special events and promotions that can lead them to websites where menus, additional testimonials, driving directions and printable coupons are there for the taking. The videos you can upload to Facebook will create a visual powerhouse of excitement and education that gives your social media followers something to always look forward to from your business.

Next Tuesday January 17th, 2012 will be the Open House for the local media to tour the new facilities of the Internet Marketing Training Center in Virginia Beach.

Over 300 local news reporters from the Virginian Pilot, local radio and television stations have been personally invited to come into the facility, listen to presentations by Tom and learn more about what the school offers.

Many have already shown interest in doing a story about Tom and the school prior to even attending the event. They are excited that a local school here in their home town is offering the kind of unique training found nowhere else, and helping local residents (and people from all over the world) to excel in the new career of Internet Marketing.

The use of sexist language is something you must also be careful to avoid in order to be in tune with today's society. There is an excellent section about this topic in the book Speak Like a Pro by Margaret Bedrosian. A salesman is now a salesperson. A fireman is now a firefighter. You don't look for a chairman for a meeting, you look for someone to chair the meeting or a chairperson.

You must be very careful in your use of humor in these sensitive times. People may fixate on one wrong word and tune you out and/or be offended. You may personally feel that using a little off-color joke once in awhile is OK, or you may think that no harm is done in using sexist language whenever you feel like it. I can assure you that you are wrong when it comes to professional presentations. Do whatever you want with your friends, but if you persist in any of these behaviors you will be labeled as "out-of-touch" and largely unpromotable in virtually every major corporation.

Well not in copywriting and not in sales. Yes, it can happen sometimes, but a good copywriter can create it with specific words and situations.

Let's consider some situations where there is true scarcity and then we'll look at some situations where we create scarcity.

TRUE SCARCITY Here are some examples:

· Beatles reunion concert

· Van Gogh paintings

· Brains in the corporate world (especially my list management company)

CREATED SCARCITY

· Everything else

Just think about it. How much do you think tickets for the Beatles concert would be? $500.00 .. . . sure if you want to be in a remote auditorium to watch a simulcast and you don't mind having lousy seats. $1,000.00, . . . $5,000.00 . . .. Who knows how high it would go. Scarcity is the reason.

It's the same thing with rare paintings, artwork, rare coins, etc.

Most of the copy you see written regarding scarcity has been created.

· "Our allotment was only 12 of this model,"

· "Only three to a customer,"

· "Only 12 left," are all generated and concocted scarcity techniques.

They just happened to forget to say the allotment was for this week and next week they get 12 more. And why is there "Only three to a customer?" Is it because the seller is only worried about being fair? There are "Only 5 left." This conveniently omits the fact that the seller can order more any time.

I'm not saying any of the above statements are untruthful or unethical (sometimes they are). The statements are simply appealing to basic human nature. When something is scarce, people want it more, they buy it faster and pay more for it. If you want people buying more of your stuff faster and paying a high price for it, then you may want to implement scarcity into your business model and most definitely into your copy.

Work some phrases like this into your copy:

· We only have space for 12 participants

· These are the last 5 available.

· We only have 2 available dates open in June

· I can only take on two new consulting clients

· We have only 4 appointments left

· Bridge line space is limited.

DON'T LIE

I am not suggesting you lie. I'm suggesting that actually limiting your availability can get you a much higher price for your products and services and make them even more in demand.

Some humor "experts" say that you should not laugh at your own jokes and stories. This may work for some, but it is definitely not my style. When I'm in front of an audience, I'm having a great time. I'm there because I love humor and laughter and I love sharing it with the audience. I can't help laughing sometimes. I laugh at what I say. I laugh at what they say. I laugh at unexpected occurrences during the presentation. That's my style. I believe that to fully connect with an audience, you must be accepted as one of them. If I expect them to laugh, then I should laugh too.

Sometimes you can laugh to tell the audience it's time to laugh. Within a matter of minutes your stage persona will be evident to the audience. As soon as they catch onto your style and rhythm, they will pick up on the cues you give them. When you laugh they know it is time for them to laugh. It's almost like holding up an applause sign. Some NO ZZZZZs presenters use facial expressions or gestures or a combination of many cues that tell the audience it's OK to laugh.

The opposite of a laughter cue is a deadpan expression. This is a serious expression that is contrasted with funny lines. The contrast evokes a larger laugh than the line could get by itself. I use this to set the audience up for some fun questions. I look completely earnest when I say, I'm the foremost expert in the world [pause] on dumb questions. It always gets a good laugh.

After you've done the best job you can preparing new material and practicing, try it out on friends and small groups. Don't tell your friends you are testing. Just plunge into the joke or story and see if they laugh or give you the kind of response you expect. You must learn to distinguish polite and real laughter on your humorous material. On your straight material you must be able to read a genuinely enthusiastic response compared to the "I'm-being-nice" enthusiastic response. Your study of audience body language will help you with this. If you are the boss, don't try things out on your subordinates. Try them out on your peers. Your subordinates may feel obligated to laugh or give you favorable opinions.

The best test for humorous material is to deliver it to the company sourpuss. If he or she laughs, you know you've got a winner. Also, be careful to recognize that some people laugh at anything. Don't let them convince you you've got a good joke or story until it's been tested on many different people.

While you are in the testing phase, try out different deliveries. Only change one element of the joke or story at a time and watch closely the reactions you get. If you make too many changes at one time, you will never know which change was the one that got the better response.

You simply sign up with a bridge line provider, pay your fee, they give you some number that I'll explain below and away you go. I currently use http://www.voicetext.com and have the capability of having 600 people on the line at one time. I started out much smaller with a 30 person bridge line that I subleased from Judy Sabah Judy@judysabah.com

DRAWBACKS
Even though telephone bridge lines are really great, there are some things you must watch for. In some cases you may want to opt for the higher quality conference call technology if you need absolute high quality.

Bridge line noise can be a problem as the number of people on the line increases. If you want an open discussion your noise level may be so high that no one can hear anything. You must keep your group size small if you want everyone to be able to contribute.

On the large seminars that I do I use the bridge line mute feature to turn off everyone else so that I can be heard clearly. Not every bridge line has this feature so check before you rent the line.

Cell phones and speaker phones can cause trouble on the line so you should discourage your participants from using them, although most of the time it's not a big problem.

Many of the smaller bridge line rental companies don't have anyone standing by in case something goes wrong. On occasion they'll give you a backup emergency number to call if the bridge isn't working.

If the seminar before you runs overtime, your seminar participants won't be able to get on the line or will pop into the wrong seminar and get confused. I rent mine exclusively 24/7 so I don't have this problem.

With all the above said, TelePhone bridge lines have really made doing seminars by phone affordable for everyone.

Handouts are multipurpose tools that enhance most presentations. They are also another way to get audience members in fun.

I provide handouts for virtually every presentation I do. One of the reasons is that audience members really enjoy being able to take something home with them. For me, it is also a way to make sure they have easy access to my name and phone number in case they have questions or if they want to hire me.

Computer programs make it very easy to create totally customized handouts for your presentations. These are valued by the participants and meeting planners much more than generic ones. I always make a customized cover that is printed on colored paper and that uses some type of graphic that pertains to the group. For instance, if I am speaking to the printing industry, I go to my electronic clipart collection and find something that pertains to printing.

In this case I located a large roll of printing paper. If I don't have any clipart that pertains to the industry, I'll put a cartoon of myself standing on a map of their state. Don't be afraid to be creative. If it is customized to them, they will love it.

I recommend making as many videos as possible to advertise your services and business on the web. Making a video is relatively easy, but how do you get the most bang for your video buck?

Keyword Research

Before you even shoot your first video, you need to do keyword research to find a title and tags for the video. Go to http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com and put the main keyword for your business in the form. You'll get 100 related keyword phrases and the number of searches a day on those phrases. Instead of just using the keywords with the most searches, scroll down to see the "longtail" keywords that are usually towards the end of the list. In a related keyword search for "public speaking", you'll find search phrases such as "getting over the fear of public speaking", "making money with public speaking", "annoying public speaking habits" and so forth. These are called "longtail" keywords and they make great titles for your videos. Your videos titled with these phrases can get a higher search result on Google, rather than using just "public speaking", which has much more competition.

Titling Videos

Be sure and title your videos with a main keyword and then a long tail keyword. For example:

* Public Speaking: Annoying Public Speaking Habits or
* Relationship Help: Where Can I Find A Soulmate or
* Leadership Skills: Skills and Tasks Required For Effective Team Leadership

Google and the other major search engines will look for the exact matches between the titles of your videos and what someone typed into a search box.

You've got a great, major presentation, and suddenly you're asked if you can get your message across in five minutes! Don't panic. For today's television generation, sound bites can be more powerful than lengthy dissertations. Here's how to compress your speech without losing impact.

Don't apologize or mention that you usually have much more time. Be confident that you can communicate in five minutes. Begin fast. Start with a an attention-getting statement such as, "Your job won't exist five years from now," or "In the next 5 minutes I want to convince you the best action you can take is__" Use a strongly visual story. Illustrate your points -- how it is now, how it will or could be -- with a story so vivid that the audience can "see" it. Divide your 5 minutes into three parts. Present a problem, a payoff, and your point of view: "The number one piece of advice I can give you today is...," your story illustrates your idea and your walk away line could be what will happen if they do what you suggest!

When it comes to spreading popular content around the web, where you post matters. A study that link-shortening service Bit.ly released on its blog Tuesday shows that different kinds of links rise and fizzle at different speeds — depending on the platform they are posted on.

Bit.ly Chief Scientist Hilary Mason and her team have borrowed a concept from nuclear physics — half-life — to explain the patterns of how people clicked on 1,000 popular Bit.ly links across Facebook, Twitter and YouTube links. Half life, in this case, is “the amount of time at which [a] link will receive half of the clicks it will ever receive after it reached its peak.”

A link to breaking news typically has a short half life; it is no longer relevant after a short amount of time. Something less timely, like a funny video, wouldn’t see the same steep drop off — so those cute kittens tend to have a longer half-life. (And we’re not talking about the half-life of Schrodinger’s Cat.)

Mason found that the type of content, however, isn’t the only predictor of how a link gets shared. It also matters where it is shared. The half-life of links posted on Facebook is on average 24 minutes longer than links to the same content posted on Twitter. And links in emails and instant messages remain active slightly longer than links on Facebook.

Link activity on these three platforms — Twitter, Facebook and email/IM — follow a similar pattern. Mason told Mashable this is likely a result of the way that the platforms interact — links posted on Twitter are likely to be shared further, through Facebook and email — though Bit.ly hasn’t attempted to quantify this relationship.

1. Engage an entertaining speaker/humorist--Speakers and humorists provide more than just entertainment. By definition a speaker/humorist provides some percentage of meaningful message that is delivered with humor.

2. Engage a comedian--Comedians normally provide 100 percent entertainment with little or no message.

3. Announce a mystery guest--a mystery guest could be a real celebrity, a top industry figure or a celebrity impersonator. Keep your eyes open for celebrities who may be in the area at the time of your meeting. These people may be willing to stop by for some extra publicity.

4. Plant shills in the crowd--Hire an actor or enlist a boisterous friend to heckle the speaker. Of course, this should be coordinated with the speaker. Funny lines and responses could be written for both the speaker and heckler.

5. Plan audience gags--Solicit fun audience members to participate in funny situations. For instance, audience members could be recruited to jump up and run out of the room when it is announced that IRS investigators have just entered the building.

Top 20 Seminar Scams and How to Avoid Them

I decided to write this article after spending over half my speaking career (about 12 years) speaking at public seminars and watching the decline of service provided by seminar speakers and promoters and the increase in scammer speakers getting rich at the expense of mostly unknowing and trusting people.

I’m hoping those speakers/promoters on the edge will clean up their acts and the really bad ones will be exposed. The good ones won’t be bothered a bit because they don’t allow these kinds of activities to occur at their events. I might add that this document is talking about expensive coaching / training programs sold at these seminars, not low cost items like books or a small CD set.

Maybe you need a kick in the rear no matter what the cost
The reason this is such a tough subject is that even some of the worst rip-off events can be an exhilarating shot in the arm or kick in the butt for some people to improve themselves. I’m all for that. What I’m totally against is the manipulation of people solely for financial gain and the devastating letdowns that occur “after” these seminars.

Nothing in this introduction underscores the fact that I'm going to be really funny. Had I put in the introduction that this will be the funniest presentation you have ever heard, I would have built an instant resistance. The audience would dig in and say to themselves, "Yeah, let's see how funny this guy really is." It makes it much easier on you to sneak up on them. Here's another benefit for you. If you don't turn out to be all that funny, you will not have bombed because you still delivered your serious message. If you advance bill yourself as funny, the exact same presentation could be considered a bomb.
